| There are a number of mood disorders that may arise in the darker days of the year, and for some, all year round. In fact, one in five people are reported to be affected by a mood disorder in their lifetime, women being more likely than men.
BioActive Nutrients, recognizing this influx in the many types of depression, has included a pharmaceutically pure L-Tryptophan in their list of quality products. It may help relieve sleep deprivation, create relaxation, soothe nerves and anxiety, relieve some premenstrual symptoms, boost the mood, increase pain tolerance and reduce carbohydrate cravings. L-Tryptophan functions better if given with a low protein food, and may pass through the blood-brain barrier easier if taken with carbohydrates and vitamin B6.
L-Tryptophan is an amino acid produced in the body, mostly in inadequate quantities, and is a precursor to serotonin in the brain. Low serotonin levels have been linked to mood disorders and the symptoms that go with them.
The fact that L-Tryptophan is added to infant formulas is evidence of the importance of this nutrient for humans.
